I tend to put my desktop (XP SP3) into standby mode when I leave it for the day since it takes several minutes to boot. (I have impaired vision and the assistive software that I must use to see the screen takes a while to load.) When I bring the machine out of standby the USB keyboard is non-functional. Since the desktop tower case is adjacent to the desk I have a USB extension cord for the keyboard and can easily just unplug it at the joint, immediately reconnect it, I get the "donk (pause) da-dunk" tones and everything is fine. But I'm wondering why the keyboard goes dead, yet the combination webcam/microphone that I use for Skype doesn't drop out.
I do note one difference - the webcam/microphone is connected to a powered USB hub, and the green light for the port with the camera comes on a few seconds after booting. I'm wondering if the keyboard needs to have power maintained during sleep? I wouldn't think so. I suppose I could move the keyboard to the hub rather than go direct to the back plane, but that seems counter-intuitive.
Any suggestions?

The power saving features was a engineers nightmare in programming. They have never worked well, I disabled those features in every OS I have had.

I would use Broni's suggestion, but if you experiment using the powered hub, please let us know how it goes. I am curious about the results. I am new here so I am trying to get my feet wet a bit. I promise I will not make myself a nuisance however.
