One of my skins, Halo Blue, has a white background for avatars. So, when you upload an avatar, if you select an image that's a cut out (something with a transparent background), the white space shows behind it. The other skins I use (Real and Aqua) are just fine. Where would I look to change this white space background to transparent?

You can log in with account "test" and password "test". Even looking at Cortana, you see the white border around her avatar. That's not part of the avatar. It's part of the white background. Look at a post by Zhaan and you'll see what I showed you in the images above.
