My CD ROM in this Windows 2000 PRO is not detecting the CD ROM and I have reinstalled the driver.

Hello Lewis,

I had this problem a couple years ago with a friends computer and finally got it fixed. Unfortunately, I'm almost 55 and it seems that I forgot how I solved the problem. It had to do with a registry edit to the keys: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325 -11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} - "Upperfilters" and "Lowerfilters". I'll try to remember and post back later. Getting old sucks! :fat_face_sad:

Ok Lewis, Here you go.

Since you don't have system restore, backup your registry before proceeding.

1. Click on START button, the click on RUN

2. Enter REGEDIT and press enter

3. When REGEDIT starts, open up the following folders
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
SYSTEM
CurrentControlSet
Control
Class
{4D36E965-E325 -11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

4. After clicking on {4D36E965-E325 -11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} you should see two settings on the right-hand side:
"Upperfilters"
"Lowerfilters"
Click on each of them, press DELETE and click YES.

Then close REGEDIT.

Go into system properties >> device manager CD/DVD Rom Drives >>double click on the drive that doesn't work >> driver tab and uninstall it. Re-start your computer when prompted.

shutdown & restart your PC

Lewis, I just found another thread that you started on this subject. I'm really sorry I just missed it. I've just been so busy lately, I just don't get a chance to read all these wonderful posts here.

Thanks Smokey, I saw that the other night at this micrsoft site below, messing with the registry just scares me, but I am going to do it. step by step. The term upper and lower at this site was what I did not understand.

As long as you follow the directions to backup your registry (follow my link). Also familiarize yourself with restoring the registry on the bottom of the same page you should be ok. Just take your time and you will learn something new. :good_luck:
