Does your XP Computer Runs Slowly? Possibility that the answer might be...

Task Manager shows really high CPU use and it looks like it's Cidaemon.exe that's using up all the CPU time. What is this "demon" that's hogging my CPU and is it safe to kill the process?

This is a common problem. What you're seeing is the Indexing service. The Cidaemon.exe process creates and updates the index catalog. It's safe to turn it off, but killing the process won't stop it from coming back. Instead, here's what you need to do:

Double click My Computer.
Select View | Explorer Bar | Search.
Click Change Preferences.
Select Without Indexing Service.
Click No, do not enable Indexing Service.
Click OK.
This should exorcise your indexing demon.

And just these few tips to add.....

Disable Media Sensing for TCP/IP

The "Media Sensing" feature in Windows XP determines whether the network hardware is in a "link state" - that is, whether your Ethernet adapters and cables are connected. If you don't want Windows to perform this check, you can disable the feature by editing the registry. For instructions on how to do so, see KB article 239924 at

Media Center Window Stays Black after you Resume from Hibernation

If you're using Windows Media Center Edition and you have the Media Center application open when your computer goes into hibernation or standby status, you might find that its window stays black when you resume operation. This happens when you're watching live or recorded TV in full-screen mode at the time the computer goes into hibernation or standby. There's an update available to fix this problem. You can read about and download it in KB article 895678:
