:excl: I have a trial version of Tune-up Utilities (I especially like the 'rescue' part). I tried 'tune-up registry cleaner' which (so far) has worked OK. My problem is that the program automatically cleaned up the registry. Is there a setting for this?

I am thinking of buying this program when the trial period runs out as I am scared to do anything to the registry but this program is automatic - and has a rescue component! Does anyone have any experience with it? :thanks:

I have that program..........since the guy that worked on my PC about a month ago installed it. It certainly doesn't have any means of controlling it. It does what it is set to do. I don't think that it works any better than my RegCleaner or RegSupreme (paid for) that I have.
After the trial period is up, I'm going to uninstall it and just use what I have. Bottom line.............wasn't impressed with it..... :fat_face_no:

PeggyB - thanks for your opinion. I googled both and RegSupreme came up as Regfix?? Do either of these programs have a 'rescue' component? I find it a comfort to know that I can always reverse things if my computer acts up. :no_no_no:

RegFix isn't the same as RegCleaner.
Go here to download it and yes it does have a backup system. I will type up a tutorial for you and post it shortly.

Here you go......hope this helps, plus I did show you 2 pictures. If I left anything out or you have question, will be happy to help you.

RegCleaner 4.3

Across the top you have Software, Startup List, Uninstall Menu, File Types, New File, Shell Extensions & Backup.
Software.........Check through that list and see if there is anything you don't need or want, if you find something you don't want just check it and when done click on Remove Selected at the bottom.
Startup List........Same as above ( only thing I have listed there is Avast (antivirus & desktop)
Uninstall Menu.......This works like click on Control Panel/Add/Remove ( I never use this as I use a uninstaller if it comes with the program and Control Panel/Add/Remove.
Files Types.......This you use the most, everytime you run this program. Scroll through everything and the ones that have N/A put a check mark......here you need to pay very close attention to what you are doing for if you check the wrong thing and remove it, you will have BIG trouble. Check off ONLY N/A files, then Remove Selected.
New Files.........Nothing to do there.
Shell Extensions........NEVER touch that unless you are very sure what you are doing. I NEVER touch that one.
Backups..........Here I usually click on select at the top and choose ALL then Remove Selected. It would be a good idea to wait until the next time around to do this....but I have never had a problem in removing them.
Lastly..........At the top click on Tools/Registry Cleanup/Do Them ALL.....if anything shows up check them off then click on Remove Selected at bottom. Don't touch anything else under Tools, I don't know about any of those things, so have NEVER touched them.

Jram is the guy to ask about this program.........I have always done what he said and have been safe in using it.

:good_one: Thank you, PeggyB, I used regcleaner this afternoon - as per your tutorial (which I have saved). I note that you only have the AV on your startup list - does windows start with only that?

I followed your instructions but I am curious - under File Types, I removed N/A - but what are they? Also, I removed Tools/registrycleanup - but I don't know what I removed? Attached Image: curious_george.jpg :thanks:

fairlopgirl, it appears you removed one of your registry cleaners and all it's backups. your online so no damage is done...... But you do need to clean the registry at least once a month. More offen if you do delete stuff all the time.
Check your programs and see if you still have a registry cleaner
if you need a free one look into this back door to Snap Files under "system Utilities"

http://www.webattack...e/freeware.html

Are you praticing that new posting of addys method at all? lol

I think RegClean is from Maceware isn't it PeggyB?
fairlopgirl, just check out this report from PC Mag.

http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_desc...id,22765,00.asp

jv16 was the greatest utility I ever found. I upset the staff when they went public and they took both copies I had of the newer registry cleaner they replaced jv16 with. A lot of people still use it. And if not to clean the registry to do the many other fuctions it has...

:fat_face_surprised: Mlurp - I followed PeggyB's tutorial so I don't think I removed anything that I shouldn't have. Regcleaner starts by saying they have nothing to do with 'regclean' which is a Microsoft program. My 'regcleaner' is still on my desktop.

When you gave me jv16 in an emergency, you advised me not to use it as a regular registry cleaner. I need the simplest possible (with a backup) as I am not sufficiently computer savvy.

No, I haven't had time to use that new method of putting the addresses in - anyway, I prefer the previous method which is easier!

Glad to see you did your first cleaning.
Yes, my AV is the only thing I have that starts up as far as I know......there may be some hidden things that start up like my desktop and etc.

For the N/A those are extension files for HKEY CLASSES ROOT........they are safe to remove.

As for that JV16 cleaner...............stay away from it. I had that once and it isn't for us beginners. I haven't learned enough about the registry to be using that yet. You will be safe with the one I just gave you.

RegCleaner 4.3 is by Jouni Vuorio.

:fat_face_surprised: PeggyB - I followed your instructions. I used regclean to uninstall 'Tune-up Utilities'. It went through the process, but is still listed on the uninstall? It doesn't appear on Windows add/remove. Why is this? Shall I just remove it? Thanks.... :fat_face_sad:

First you should have used the uninstall mgr. that was in the program. It is in my add/remove, I haven't uninstalled it yet after reinstalling it, because the uninstall mgr was missing. You might try going to Start/mycomputer/programfiles and see if it is there, if not try Start/search and type it in and let the wizard see if he finds it and then you can delete whatever files you find.
If you still have problem let me know.

:fat_face_sad: I remember (too late) that you said to use the uninstall manager that came with the program first!! :head_wall:

I shut down my computer overnight - and this morning it seems to have disappeared!! It is, of course, still in my back-up file. Shall I install it and then uninstall it - or be satisfied that it had disappeared? :help!: :thanks:

Click on Start/Search then click on all files and folders and type in tuneup utilities and then search. Whatever comes up just delete it.

Well since I am a clean freak, I use it at least every other day, sometimes everyday. Just depends if I stay up really late.
Some people only clean once a week or even once a month. Guess it just depends on the person.
