USB vs CD or DVD speed for running apps

Recommended Posts

Hopefully a simple question..........I recently updated a thumb drive with a set of 90 applications called LIBERKEY.

Question is = never heard anything said about the speed of running apps from a thumb drive as opposed to a CD or DVD..........plenty of info about apps on a CD or DVD running slower, but how about the SPEED of running apps from a thumb drive ?? I assume a thumb drive is slower than a HARD DRIVE but faster than a CD or DVD ??

I would think that a solid state device would be fast, but then I guess some thumb drives read and write data faster than others and that is another can of worms.

Thanks for any advice.

Linux live isos run faster on usb vs a disk drive like dvd or cd. So look up read write speeds on dvd drives vs usb drives.

Then usb 1.1 vs 2.0 vs 3.0 read and write speeds.

Logic tells me usb is always faster than dvd or cd.

Some information on USB versions.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB_flash_drive

A USB 3.0 stick will run at UB 2.0 when plugged into a USB 2 bus.

To boot this laptop , linux live cd, takes about 3.5 minutes to boot up.

USB 3.0 bootable stick, USB 2.9 bus, about 2 minutes to boot up. Same OS

USB 3.0 bootable stick, USB 3.0 bus, about 1 minute.

SSD, well it boots in about 20 seconds.  Same Linux OS.
