:fat_face_surprised: I have a shortcut on my desktop to smartest computing. However, when I click on that I get a print box!

I read Dobar's problem with getting a link - he tried a different browser and it worked. So, I have been having trouble with a link and I thought I'd try it. I downloaded 'Avast' and made it my default browser. Didn't work so I uninstalled it. Then my trouble started. What have I done? Attached Image: help.jpg

Attached Image: duh.gif I have tried several shortcuts on my desktop - it seems that they work when it is to a program but not to a web site. I thought this info may be helpful. Thanks!! :fat_face_sad:

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I had problems in Win2000 when typing in the URL for this forum until I looked at the URL on my WinXP computer and noticed I didn't put in the .us part, as in
http://www.smartestcomputing.us.com/. After that all was good and I dragged the icon in the Address box onto the Links Toolbar.

:fat_face_no: Berton - thanks for your help but I don't think that is my problem as the shortcuts were working perfectly until I messed up! Also, none of my shortcuts to web sites work.... :head_wall:

What will happen, if you open your browser, and you type an address? Will it go there?

yes, I can get to the web pages (i.e. smartest computing) if I type in the address. The prgrams seem to work OK.

Attached Image: question_mark.jpg I also tried going on the site, putting it in the links and then putting a shortcut on the desktop. This opened the same way - with the printer box. Attached Image: puzzled_2.jpg

Help is appreciated.....

My problem was not getting a link...my problem is seeing a link. My NIS for some reason does not like the link that Ken posted. I'm still trying to find out why. If I turn off the "Security" part of NIS I can see Ken's link.

Sounds to me like you have associated Web Page shortcuts (*.url) to your printer.
- Open Windows explorer => then click on Tools => then Folder options.
- Click on File Types tab and scroll down to URL. What program is associated with it to open *.url.

You can see that mine right now is Internet Explorer as I'm playing with IE7.0 Beta right now.

Also is IE set as your default Browser?
- Open IE => then click on Tools => then Internet Options
- Click on Programs tab
- On the bottom of window make sure "Internet Explorer should check whether it is the default browser" it checked

I would go with dobhar on this...
At the same time, you may also right clcik on your desktop shortcut, click on "Properties", then on "Shortcut" tab, and post a screenshot of it, as well...

:fat_face_sad: Dobhar - I couldn't find tools in windows explorer - but I found folder options in my control panel. The program associated with URL is IE:
Attached Image: shortcut_options.gif

IE should check whether it is the default browser is checked.

Broni - I right clicked on the shortcut, clicked on Properties - but didn't see a 'shortcut' tab. This is a screen shot:

I hope you can help..... Thanks!

Try this...Open IE and navigate to http://www.smartestcomputing.us.com/. Once your at SC then...

- Click on "File" at the top
- Select "Send"
- In the "Send" drop-down select send shortcut to Desktop
- You should now have a SC shortcut on your Desktop
- Double-click shortcut what happens?
- If still problem give us the Properties of the Shorcut...here's mine...

Attached Image: ScreenHunter_008.gif

Broni...notice that her shorcut in the example she posted is a ?...It should be an "e" for IE.

Fairlopgirl...what was the last thing you installed or did before your problem appeared.

Dobhar - If I place a new shortcut on my desktop - it still operns with the printer box.

Here is my right-click on the shortcut/properties which is not the same as your sample:

Attached Image: shortcut_options.gif

The last thing I did was install 'Avant' and then uninstall it.

Thanks!

:dancing_dude: :dancing_dude: :dancing_dude: I am so excited - I read Cloudeight's newsletter and tried one of their hints - I clicked on start/set programs and defaults and chose IE and OE and it worked - even though they say it only works on XP!! Now my shortcuts work as they should!!

This is a good tip and may help someone else out of trouble! Attached Image: smiley_clapping.gif

Nice job, :fat_face_smiling:

Sorry I did not answer back right away...I took some much needed time off.

Can you post the hint that you got the info from or is their a link on their web site? Maybe someone else could use it.

Thanks,

Dobhar - I hope you had a good rest...but you seem to be catching up with all the posts you missed! That's exhausting!

The tip was: Attached Image: restoring_IE_and_OE.gif

As I have W2000, I did Start/set programs and defaults/IE/OE.
