Wireless Connection Problem

18 March 2012 - 07:30 PM

Compaq Presario C700 2 GB RAM Vista SP2...Driving me nuts...

Computer will see but not connect to my wireless network. I.e., my SSID shows up and when I attempt to connect everything appears normal, prompts me for security key, then errors out (after several minutes) -> "Cannot connect to network." Have tried static IP and same result. Multiple other wireless devices connect to the network without issue. Computer connects fine hard wired to the router.

AND, when I fire up my Nexus One (phone) and activate the hotspot, the computer in question will connect to the hotspot just fine, access the internet, etc.

Computer using built-in wireless adapter: Atheros AR5007 802.11b/g. Modem is 2WIRE supplied by AT&T. Connection is WPA-PSK over "G."

Windows shows the wireless adapter driver as "latest."

Could there be a conflict between the 2WIRE and the Atheros adapter?

[RESOLVED] Tough One - System Check infection

26 January 2012 - 10:24 PM

Dell Inspiron 1545, Win 7 64 bit

Friend opened an email attachment (from her father!) last night, computer immediately blackscreened. Re-booted and fake scanner hijacked all operation.

I was able to run RKILL successfully, it killed several malicious processes, then ran SAS Portable. SAS found 6 instances of Fake Alert and disabled Task Manager. Re-booted to quarantine and/or delete and computer won't re-boot. Goes to Win 7 start screen, "something" flashes on top line of screen leaving the top row of pixels 1/3 multi-colored and no boot.

[RESOLVED] OEM MS Office 2003

20 December 2011 - 07:01 PM

Dell Dimension 2400 with Win XP was purchased new by a friend of mine with Office 2003 (Office XP).

The OS is corrupted and needs to be re-installed and they do not have any original CD's.

I was able to pull the Product key using Magic Jelly Bean Finder but Dell says that the product is too old for them to have the software, go to Microsoft. MS says that they can't help because Dell provided the software...

So, how do I find a download of MS Office 2003 that will work with the key that I have?

FYI - Phishing Email

25 October 2011 - 03:37 PM

Just received a phishing email purportedly from NACHA regarding an ACH transaction that was "canceled by the Electronic Payments Association." NACHA is a legitimate organization but (from its website): "NACHA does not send communications of any type to persons or organizations about individual ACH transactions that they originate or receive." The email is purposefully vague in order to get you to click on the link: report_166515734351.pdf.exe. In the original email, the referenced link was "live" but, obviously, it is not "live" here. Complete contents of the email below:

The ACH transaction (ID: 166515734351), recently sent from your checking account (by you or any other person), was canceled by the Electronic Payments Association.

Canceled transaction
Transaction ID: 166515734351
Rejection Reason See details in the report below

About NACHA
The ACH Network had its start in the early 1970's when a group of California bankers formed the Special Committee on Paperless Entries (SCOPE) in direct response to the rapid escalation of check volume in the United States. The Committee set out to explore the technical, operational, and legal framework necessary for an automated payments system, leading to the formation of the first ACH association in 1972. Similar groups soon formed around the country.
More than 18.2 billion ACH payments were made in 2008, an increase of 1.2 billion over 2007. ACH payment volume continues to double every five years. The 2007 Federal Reserve Payments Study revealed ACH payments had the largest compound annual growth rate, 18.6 percent, of all U.S. non-cash payments.

[Inactive] Nothing Will Run

26 September 2011 - 09:48 PM

Win 7 64 bit/Vista 64 bit, dual boot. Win 7 infected; will boot to desktop but nothing will run - .exe, .com, etc. None of the RKILL variants will run, SAS portable (.com) will not run. Ditto for Safe Mode.

Booted to the Vista side and ran SAS from there on the Win 7 disk (separate physical hard drives). Nothing found but cookies and adware. Currently running Avast from the Vista side on the Win 7 disk.

User (nephew) said that he "got a link from a friend" to watch the UFC fight for free - last Saturday, I presume. Fight ran fine but now nothing else will run.

Help!
