Thanks--I've got that one. Amazon has pulled most of theirs--never dreamed they would do that as most of the older ones had only recently become available in digital form. We're particularly looking for 'Eight Feet in the Andes.'

Amazon did have it and several others for Kindle just a few days ago. I sent Michael the link then, but he did not act in time. I'm just hoping to find it for him--I had it in print, but it probably went in my last donation to the library. I got Michael started on her books as he has been in many of the areas she writes about. We both have enjoyed her travel books so much. In her first book she travels from Ireland to India on a bicycle in the 50's. She is a real character! Thanks for trying to help!

Deadly Straits (A Tom Dugan Novel)

By R E McDermott

http://www.amazon.com/Deadly-Straits-Tom-Dugan-Novel-ebook/dp/B0057AMO2A/?_bbid=120475&_bbtype=email

When marine engineer and very part-time spook Tom Dugan becomes collateral damage in the War on Terror, he's not about to take it lying down.

Falsely implicated in a hijacking, he's offered a chance to clear himself by helping the CIA snare their real prey, Dugan's best friend, London ship owner Alex Kairouz. Reluctantly, Dugan agrees to go undercover in Alex's company, despite doubts about his friend's guilt. Once undercover, Dugan's steadfast refusal to accept Alex's guilt puts him at odds not only with his CIA superiors, but also with a beautiful British agent with whom he's romantically involved.

When a tanker is found adrift near Singapore with a dead crew, and another explodes in Panama as Alex lies near death after a suspicious suicide attempt, Dugan is framed for the attacks. Out of options, and convinced the attacks are prelude to an even more devastating assault, Dugan eludes capture to follow his last lead to Russia, only to be shanghaied as an 'advisor' to a Russian Spetsnaz unit on a suicide mission.

Deadly Straits is a non-stop thrill ride, from London streets, to the dry docks of Singapore, to the decks of the tankers that feed the world's thirst for oil, with stops along the way in Panama, Langley, Virginia, and Teheran. Richly spiced with detail from the author's 30 years sailing, building, and repairing ships worldwide, it is, in the words of one reviewer, "fast-paced, multilayered and gripping."

READER COMMENTS

"An awesome book! It has a very Tom Clancy feel. Kudos to Mr. McDermott. Well done, Sir."

D. Bosshardt, Amazon - 5 Stars

"An absolute cracker of a thriller, quite simply on a par with Clancy et al. When I'd finished I wanted more! A terrific story superbly written.

'Tao" Amazon (UK) - 5 Stars

"A little Clancy, a bit of Ludlum, and a lot of Mr. McDermott!"

Libby Dunkin, Amazon - 5 Stars

"Move over WEB Griffin, Cussler, & Ludlum. Weaving together come-alive characters, McDermott takes us through an all too realistic plot involving oil tankers used to cause havoc to the worlds' shipping ... a page turner."

Bob Hopfe, Amazon - 5 Stars

"A brilliant thriller. I was quite surprised that this is a first novel. On par with high ranking thrillers. Action non-stop ...a great read."

Cheryl M-M, Amazon (UK) - 5 Stars

"In 1994 (Debt of Honor), Tom Clancy used a jumbo jet as a weapon ... it happened on 9/11. In 2011 R.E. McDermott published "Deadly Straits" where supertankers are used as terror weapons with deadly results. Let's hope we don't look back and say McDermott predicted that. This is a book of action and suspense, well written with multiple plots woven into one coherent whole. I've read several best-sellers that are legends in the genre and this book is as well done as any of them, if not better."

Stephen C. Lovely, Amazon - 5 Stars

"McDermott consistently gets it right. The captains, mates and engineers sound like captains, mates and engineers ... like visiting old friends. Tom Dugan - a skilled professional a bit rough around the edges - works well as the protagonist. Smart and educated, he also regularly gets grease under his nails, and moves easily between action and insight. A book even a thriller skeptic and ship geek can love. A gripping read - highly recommended."

Rick Spilman, The Old Salt Blog - 5 Stars

"In a book that takes no prisoners, McDermott tells a tale of high seas terrorism and tells it well. Go get this one, right now!"

Nancy, Cheryl's Book Nook - 5 Stars

"In 20 years at sea as mate and captain, I've been through the Panama Canal too many times to count, and through the Bosphorus and Malacca Straits as well. You nailed it. Yours was the first novel to convince me the author had been there too. Well Done."

cntrywolf, I'm glad you've resurrected book topics here, we're voracious readers. Don't use Kindles, our neighborhood clubhouse has an honor library and have often discovered new authors there.

My wife and I just finished one, it's the later of a series and the earlier one will turn up there in due time:

"James R. Hannibal—a veteran combat pilot with Top Secret clearance from the U.S. government—continues the thrilling international action and intrigue, following covert operative Nick Baron.

How far will collateral damage from a CIA drone strike reach?

When a suicide bomber attacks the National Mall, former pilot and undercover Cerberus operative Nick “Victor” Baron receives an eerie invitation from the chess app on his phone—a mysterious figure named the Emissary wants to play.

Nick and his Triple Seven Chase unit are drawn into battle against an unknown opponent who has resurrected the legendary Hashashin order of assassins. And there is a long-awaited prophecy being fulfilled by a series of violent attacks which may culminate with a final apocalypse over Jerusalem.

The lines between the game and the fight begin to blur as every time Nick loses a piece on the board, he loses one of his men. And if Nick cannot find a way to stop the terrorist mastermind, a checkmate may kill millions…"

You've provided quite a list of unknowns that I've noted & will keep an eye out for. Thanks much!

#1 AMAZON BESTSELLER

When the body of Hunter Gearhardt washes up on the banks of a seasonal river outside of Pomacochas, Peru, with only samples of vegetation, a handful of feathers, two black- and gray-streaked rocks, and a golden headdress of indeterminate origin in his possession, his grieving father launches an expedition to determine how his son died. The party uses these clues to divine Hunter’s route into the jungle, where they find a surviving offshoot of a primitive tribe, long thought to be extinct, and something far more sinister, something that’s been able to avoid discovery for eons for one simple reason: No one leaves the rainforest alive.

Twenty Seven Million Kindle Edition

by Brian Neary (Author)

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00MH43I5Q

Following his award winning first novel, "Hawk," Brian Neary delivers “Twenty Seven Million,” the second in the series - a brain teasing thriller featuring CIA agent Quentin Hawk, the former pro athlete with the Mensa IQ.

When a team of hit men pulls off a stunning kidnap in Los Angeles, a graffiti-styled ransom note is delivered to the Pope’s personal mailbox in Rome. 5000 miles away, Agent Hawk is hoisting his fourth pint of Guinness in a Dublin pub – on the verge of teaching a local bully a lesson in Muay Thai dirty-fighting – when he gets the call from his boss. The Vatican has called in the CIA.

On the Agency’s Gulfstream jet, concealing the blood on his knuckles, Hawk reviews the sparse particulars of the case, only mildly distracted by the long legged, hazel eyed stewardess who pours his Tullamore Malt.

The Vatican insists that the investigation be kept secret from the Italian police and away from all media. But once Hawk arrives in Europe to begin his investigation, three attempts are made on his life and the ransom fee is tripled. When the kidnappers stop communicating Hawk and his team are fired by the Pope’s secretary.

Could a black ops plot have originated within the Vatican walls? Once the question is posed, the forces of evil intervene, the twists and turns multiply, the action doubles and what began as a thrill packed adventure becomes a challenging, whodunit mystery.

Having been officially removed from the case - unrelenting, belligerent as ever - Hawk ignores the “pussies” at Langley and persists. He’s left with only two leads… an on-line master criminal with an ever changing IP address and two women ready to give their lives to protect him. The conclusion is a stunner.

Just visited our clubhouse library. Gads, so many Danielle Steel & Nora Roberts, my wife won't even read 'em. :-)

Found a Clive Cussler we missed, then stumbled on an Alex Berenson, 'Twelve Days', 2015. I grabbed it as fast as a politicians fist around a cash bribe.

One called Medusa, a Kurt Austin adventure. A few days ago I found a Dirk Pitt one, Havana Storm (2014) and another I returned, can't remember the name right now. Both are written by Clive and his son Dirk.

Love to see his real-life vintage car collection!
